Thank you for this journey! I've followed it since the first question and I've found it very useful.

I'm always afraid about telling others my story.
Also if I've been fascinated by fabrics and sewing all my life I'm a self-tought without degrees in art or similar. I'm a Marine Biologist instead (and happy to be also if I don't work as MB).
When I say this to people who ask me if I've an art degree they usually react well, with compliments and so on, but still I'm afraid about telling my story.

I have another exception for you, at least in some instances.

I work in a several media and am expanding from there. This does make me something of an odd duck, I know. For me, though, I am less interested in the medium than in the message. I am fascinated by dogs and I portray them in polymer clay, earthenware clay, Drystone, which is a casting compound made from gypsum cement and some other things to increase hardness and durability, and I also paint and draw. I make figurines, Christmas ornaments, jewelry, other collectibles, and now I am painting again. I wanted something for the walls of my booth when I sell and knew that in most cases I would not be able to use framed prints of dogs that I have purchased for resale.

Thanks Christopher! I am sure this will help those in their quest for learning what type of insurance and which company to go with. There are several artists I know that use RLI, I personally use Travelers Insurance, while a few others I know use State Farm. All I can say is you have to shop around, but RLI is one of the best when working with artists/crafts people. - Michelle

These are all great ideas! I would say that another idea would be to join a local networking group, whether it's artist related or not, to try and spread the word that way. You never know who might be looking for something fabulous (and local) to use as a client gift or who might be interested in having a home show or is connected with a gallery owner, etc.

Hello ~2~ I have just started reading your questions series as I recently joined Art Fair Insiders and have found it very enlightening and informative. I did use my last name in naming my business "The Drake's Nest Studios - 'Make a Memory with Your Child's Art'," as it encompasses a number of areas - photography, fiber art, quilts, baskets, miniature bears, etc. I may change it later, as I grow, but for right now it does not seem to pose a problem. I have found that people are inquiring and I've even had some nibbles for commissioned work. Hi :) I read this question serie since you started but it's my first comment :)
To choose my business name was really simple, because I've used a word that not only is in my heart, and is my internet nick since 2004, but also is a nice word joke.
I've choosen "OrkaLoca". In italian (my language) it sounds exactly like orcaloca!, a common exclamation that express surprise. Moreover I love killer whales and I've a killer whale as my logo. Killer whale in italian is "orca". "Loca" in spanish means crazy, and I'm absolutly a little bit crazy :) Can you see the joke?

"OrkaLoca" is easy to remember but doesn't tell anything about what I do, so I've added it a slogan that is "beyond the quilt". So my logo includes an orca, my name and the slogan (you can see it here) and if I can't put the logo I write everytime both name and slogan.

I'm quite happy with it and my customers seems to like it :)

Having a neighbouring stall constantly complain within ear shot is so unprofessional. If you want to bitch, go elsewhere! when things are slow I hit the front of the stall and re-organise, customers normally arrive, I apologise for re-organising and then there is opportunity for conversation about the product. It is all about the product! Even on a slow day, your goal should be to press the flesh and get a business card into each hand.
